Under threat from the French, this 1860 Palmerstonian fort was built to protect the South Coast of England from invasion.

The fort is located high above the sea with views across the famous Needles stacks and lighthouse. There is an exhibition and 200ft tunnel leading to dramatic searchlight positions with fine views of the Hampshire and Dorset coastline. There is a tea room with excellent views of the Needles and Light house, serving 1940's style food.

On the headland above the battery there is a rocket testing site which was in operation during the 1950's & 60's and some excellent walks over the adjoining Tennyson Down.

Open Good Friday. Property closes in bad weather, please telephone on day of visit to check. There is no vehicular access to the Battery (visitors with disabilities by arrangement). Parking available 1 mile away at Alum Bay (minimum charge £3).
